SEPTEMBER NATIONAL RECOVERY MONTH
National Recovery Month is an annual observance held every September to promote and support new evidence-based treatment and recovery practices, the emergence of a strong and proud recovery community, and the dedication of service providers and community members who make recovery possible.
Key Elements of National Recovery Month:
Purpose: To increase awareness and understanding of mental and substance use disorders and celebrate the people who recover.
Theme: Each year, there is a national theme highlighting a specific aspect of recovery. Recent themes have emphasized the importance of community support, the strength found in seeking help, and the value of long-term recovery.
Celebration of Recovery: It honors individuals who have overcome substance use and mental health challenges and recognizes the contributions of family members, peer specialists, treatment providers, and recovery advocates.
Reducing Stigma: Recovery Month helps to reduce the stigma associated with addiction and mental health conditions, encouraging individuals to seek help without shame or fear.
Community Engagement: Organizations host events such as walks, rallies, educational workshops, art shows, recovery balls, and more to raise awareness and bring people together in solidarity.
History:
Established in 1989 by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), National Recovery Month has grown into a national movement involving thousands of communities and organizations across the country.
